Aisle sizing: common safety guidance recommends travel aisles be at least 3 feet wider than the widest powered equipment that uses them, with separated pedestrian walkways wherever the two streams must cross. Crossings should be marked crosswalks with clear sight lines — add stop marks, mirrors, or warning signage at blind corners.
Warehouse floor layout: best practices
- Separate people from forklifts. Run pedestrian walkways along walls or dedicated corridors; never assume shared space is safe.
- Define staging areas at receiving and shipping, at the ends of rack rows, and around workstations.
- Mark dock zones — trailer positions, dock-door keep-clear zones, and trailer-walking routes.
- Flag hazard zones — electrical panels (keep required working clearances marked and unobstructed), battery-charging areas, and any location with pinch points.
